How the milk crate calculator works
Our calculator starts with the real interior dimensions of the four most common milk crate types: the square 16QT (13" x 13" x 11"), the rectangular 24QT (19" x 13" x 11"), the short / half crate (13" x 13" x 5.5"), and a typical collapsible crate (~16.5" x 12" x 10.5"). From there it applies one of two methods depending on what you picked:
- Preset use cases (vinyl records, books, CDs, shoes, clothes, canned goods, tools, pantry items and more) use real-world packing tests so the numbers match what collectors and movers actually get.
- Custom objects ask for the length, width and height of a single item. The calculator then tries all six axis-aligned rotations inside each crate and keeps the orientation that fits the most pieces.
The recommended crate type is highlighted in amber at the top of the results. Every row in the comparison table also links to the best-reviewed crates in that category, so you can go straight from calculation to buying.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many vinyl records fit in a milk crate?
A standard 13 x 13 x 11 inch square milk crate (16QT) holds approximately 60 to 70 12-inch vinyl LP records packed upright with enough room to flip through them. A rectangular 19 x 13 x 11 inch 24QT crate holds about 90 to 100 LPs. For smaller 7-inch singles, you can fit around 200 to 220 in a square crate.
How many books fit in a milk crate?
You can fit roughly 40 paperback books or 18 hardcover / textbooks in a standard square milk crate. A rectangular 24QT crate holds about 60 paperbacks or 28 hardcovers. Because books are heavy, we recommend using heavy-duty milk crates rated for 75 lbs or more when storing large book collections.
How do I calculate how many milk crates I need?
Count how many items you want to store, then divide by the number of items that fit in one crate. Our calculator does this automatically for every standard crate type - square 16QT, rectangular 24QT, short, and collapsible - so you can compare side by side before buying. For custom objects, enter the length, width and height and the calculator tests all six rotations to find the best fit.
What size is a standard milk crate?
The standard milk crate size is 13 x 13 x 11 inches outside (roughly 12 x 12 x 10.5 inches inside). This is called a 16QT crate. A larger rectangular 24QT dairy crate measures 19 x 13 x 11 inches. Both are the sizes our calculator uses by default.
Can I use the calculator for moving boxes?
Yes. Select the Moving day (mixed household) preset to estimate how many milk crates replace your standard moving boxes. One milk crate roughly equals one small-to-medium moving box, so a one-bedroom apartment typically needs 15 to 25 milk crates. Pair them with stackable heavy-duty crates so you can tower them securely in a truck.
How accurate is the milk crate calculator?
The calculator gives a realistic estimate based on typical packing - not the theoretical maximum. Real-world capacity varies with item shape, padding, and how tightly you pack. Always round up and consider buying one or two extra crates for flexibility.
Which milk crate is best for heavy items?
For heavy items such as books, canned goods, tools or auto parts, choose a heavy-duty milk crate made from thick-wall HDPE plastic rated for 100 lbs or more. Avoid collapsible crates for heavy loads - they are rated for 15 to 40 lbs. Our heavy-duty milk crates guide ranks the strongest options.
